PRESENTATION DRIVE SHAFTS

The drive shafts fitted to PSA vehicles have two main sources :

1 - SPECIAL TOOLS

reference description Peugeot No(s).
[1] gaiter fitting tool on final drive end with metal supports for all models (-).0410-M

2 - DRIVE SHAFTS

2 - 1 - DRIVE SHAFTS GLAENZER SPICER (GKN)

These drive shafts have :

These drive shafts are recognisable by a bell casing (1) at the wheel end in steel, in the form of a sphere (GE or Exterior GLAENZER) and by a steel cap (2) at the gearbox end (GI or Inner GLAENZER) .

The diameter of the bell casing and that of the sliding spider give the shaft category .

The connecting shaft is solid or tubular .

The gaiter is identified in relation to the joint .

Example :

2 - 2 - DRIVE SHAFTS PSA

The joint at the wheel end called a RZEPPA joint is a ball joint (3) .

The diameter of the balls determines the diameter of the bell casing (C) .

The bell casing is made from machined steel with a wide chamfer .

The joint at the gearbox end called a JB joint has a sliding spider .

The short cap (4) is made from machined or raw steel; there is a sub-contracted manufacture at GLAENZER called GI rda, where the shaft is connected to the bell casing by welding .

Identification of the gaiter :

NOTE : there are mixed drive shafts; these are fitted with a GLAENZER joint at the wheel end and a PSA joint at the gearbox end .

3 - DRIVE SHAFT GAITERS

3 - 1 - THERMOPLASTIC GAITER

The thermoplastic gaiters (5) have the appearance of rigid plastic; these gaiters are mainly fitted at the wheel end .

This type of gaiter contains TOTAL N3945 type grease; this grease has a smooth appearance and is dark grey in colour; the sachets of grease have a green mark .

3 - 2 - NEOPRENE GAITER

The Neoprene gaiters (6) have a rubbery appearance; these gaiters are fitted at the wheel end and at the differential end; at the differential end, only on the new generations of drive shafts .

These gaiters contain BERUTOX GGF61 grease; when it is new, this grease has a coarse appearance and is beige in colour .

3 - 3 - INTERCHANGEABILITY

The driveshafts are interchangeable .

IMPERATIVE : the gaiters are not interchangeable; the greases cannot be mixed; the TOTAL N3945 grease and the Neoprene gaiters are incompatible .

3 - 4 - SPECIAL FEATURES

Some models are fitted with rings (D) to prevent centrifuging of the gaiter at the wheel end .

The gaiters have 1, 2 or no beading; they are not interchangeable .

Gaiters exist which have set-in supports (7) or bonded supports (8) and (9) .

Sealing is on the bearing surfaces (10) or by means of an O-ring (11) .

These types of gaiter are fitted using tool [1]; to guarantee sealing, the supports (7) and (9) must be fitted under a pressure of approximately 500 daN .

4 - IDENTIFICATION OF DRIVE SHAFTS

The transmissions are identified by etching (E) or labelling with 5 characters .
