REPLACEMENT OF THE PRE-TENSIONING COMPONENTS AFTER TRIGGERING OF THE AIRBAG AND THE BELTS - INSTRUCTION FOR REPLACEMENT OF FAULTY PARTS AND REPAIRABILITY OF THE HARNESS

IMPERATIVE : following deployment of each safety system, replace the following components .

1 - PARTS REQUIRED

driver's airbag system
A F G R S T
406 from production launch 1 1 1 1 - -
406 coupe : from production launch 1 1 1 1 - -

A = Control unit .

F = Rotary connector .

G = Air-bag .

R = Steering wheel .

S = Steering wheel and air bag .

T = Special steering wheel which contains the electronics .

side airbag system (only)
P E Q D
406 from production launch - 1 + 1 1+1 -
406 coupe from production launch - 1 + 1 1+1 -

P = Satellite (According to the right or left side) .

E = Side airbag ECU (According to the right or left side) .

Q = Seat (According to the right or left side) .

D = Ecu for airbags and pre-tensioning seat belts .

In the event of the 1st threshold triggering of the seat belts, the following components are to be replaced :

In the case of triggering of the seats and the airbags (2nd level), only the following components are to be replaced :

IMPERATIVE : replace the fascia after triggering of the passenger air bag since there is a risk of the fascia cracking .

2 - VISUAL METHODS FOR CHECKING WHETHER A COMPONENT HAS BEEN DEPLOYED

2 - 1 - PRE-TENSIONER SEAT BELT STALK(S)

The belt stalk, after deployment, is pulled towards the interior of the seat trim by approximately 80 mm (X) .

The section of the cable (1) has partially entered the seat trim .

The inertia reel seat belt comes free and no longer locks on impact .

NOTE : if the passenger seat is not occupied, the seat belt stalk recess is greater on this seat than on the driver's seat .

2 - 2 - PRE-TENSIONING SEAT BELT REEL(S)

It is not necessary to remove the inner panel in order to visually check whether the inertia reel (3) located behind the B post inner panel has been deployed .

At the inertia reel the belt (2) is locked by the mechanism and is no longer operational .

2 - 3 - PASSENGER AIR BAG NEUTRALISATION SWITCH

The status of the disarming switch for the passenger airbag is activated in the on position, or de-activated in the off position, by means of the ignition key .

The on position triggers the airbag in the case of a frontal impact .

The display of this function is reinforced by a warning light on the instrument panel of certain vehicles .

3 - INSTRUCTIONS FOR REPLACEMENT OF PARTS

The parts replaced will be deployed in the following cases :

Therefore, all warranty return parts required will be returned without being deployed .

4 - CONDITIONS FOR TRANSPORTING EXPLOSIVE COMPONENTS

Transport of these components is linked to the transport procedure for dangerous products ; These products are classed as category 9 and have been able to be transported without any restriction on quantity until 31/12/1996 for all european countries except great britain, which has no restriction until 17/01/2001 and spain, while waiting for a response .

The packaging recovered from the replacement part must be used to transport the parts .

5 - REMINDER OF THE EXPIRY DATE OF EXPLOSIVE COMPONENTS (SEE SI NO. 70)

Each explosive component has an expiry date and must not remain in use for more than 10 years from the date of first registration .

6 - REPAIRABILITY OF THE HARNESS

IMPERATIVE : after any deployment of the airbags and seat belts centralised system, thoroughly check all the electrical harness as well as the various connectors in the system .

WARNING : the repair or joining of electric wires is strictly prohibited on all explosive component lines (the link from the ECU to the explosive component) .

However, the repair of electrical wires is permitted for the following :

Compulsory method of repair :

IMPERATIVE : repair of the wires must be carried out with heat shrink sleeves and outer covers (kit (-).1228) .

7 - CHECK AFTER OPERATION

IMPERATIVE : after any work performed on the central airbags system, carry out a fault reading with the diagnostic equipment .
